BBC News Name CEO Deborah Turness – The Hollywood Reporter

The BBC has appointed former president of NBC News International Deborah Turness as Chief Executive, BBC News and Current Affairs. She will join the BBC from ITN, where she currently holds the position of CEO.

As CEO of BBC News, she will be responsible for a team of around 6,000 people, broadcasting to nearly half a billion people around the world in more than 40 languages. The BBC says it is “continuously rated as the world’s most trusted provider of international news and a record number of people have turned to BBC News during the coronavirus pandemic.” It notes that the latest figures show eight out of 10 UK adults use BBC News every week.

BBC Director General Tim Davie said: “Deborah brings a wealth of experience, insight, first-class editorial review and a strong distribution track record. “She is a fervent supporter of the power of fair journalism and a big believer in the BBC and our role, in the UK and globally. She will do an outstanding job in leading our news and current affairs as we carry out the BBC’s mission to serve the public in the digital age. ”

Prior to joining ITN, Turness served as the first president of NBC News International, where she was responsible for overseeing its operations, including editorial, production and commercial. Before, she worked as an editor of ITV News.

Turness first joined ITN as a freelancer while studying a graduate journalism course in France in his early 20s. In the years that followed, she worked in foreign affairs, family and planning agencies before joining the Northern England office. She later became a producer for ITN’s Washington Office during Clinton’s years in the White House and spent time in Bosnia during the Balkan War. She was appointed deputy editor of ITV News in 2002 and then appointed editor in 2004.
