BC community celebrates first Rambo movie

HOPE, BC –

The community of Hope, BC, is embracing its Rambo roots for a weekend event celebrating its 40th anniversary First Blood.

The iconic 1982 film, which led to four sequels and an animated television series, was filmed at several locations in and around Hope. The metropolitan’s connection to the franchise has attracted countless fans for decades – and many returned this weekend.

“It was like Rambo-mania here in the town where it all began, in the original North Hollywood,” said Brian McKinney, an event organizer, who remembers I watched the movie again when I was 13 years old.

McKinney said fans of the series starring Sylvester Stallone are coming to town from as far away as Germany and Japan. Festival activities include walking tours, movie screenings and meeting some of the actors.

There was also a special premiere on Saturday of a new Rambo-related woodcut. On Sunday, Wallace Street. will also be closed for most of the day due to a tank scheduled to drive parked cars up and down the street.

Vernon’s Jacob Kalashmikoff appeared Friday dressed as protagonist John Rambo.

“It’s a great movie,” said Kalashmikoff. “I drive past Hope all the time and immediately what comes to mind is Rambo.”

A representative for Hope Tourism said this weekend could be the busiest day of the year.

“At our visitor center, we can get more than 15-20,000 requests a year for anything movie-related,” McKinney said.

The celebration also includes a tribute to the late Brian Dennehy, who starred at Sgt. Will Teasle. Organizers said the award was a surprise and would be announced on Saturday.

“We felt it was too good an opportunity to pass up,” said William Lancaster, Dennehy’s grandson, who flew in with his family from Los Angeles. “There’s something so moving and endearing and heartfelt and also so weird and crazy about it that makes us feel like, let’s go.”

Lancaster brought in a small crew to document the weekend.

Hope Mayor Peter Robb also announced a new street, aptly named Rambo Lane. The area is also where the film’s climax was shot, in which Rambo was shooting across the street at the Mountain State Savings Bank, now Treehouse Health Foods.
