BC Road Report: ‘Major delays’ expected in Hwy. 3 after an hour-long closure

VANCOUVER –

Officials said a major route out of southern British Columbia was closed for hours on Monday due to washout.

Highway 3 was closed in both directions between Hope and Princeton shortly after noon, with no detours.

It reopened to a rotating lane of traffic about four hours later, but drivers have been warned of “major delays” due to the closure and limited traffic allowed through.

The route also known as the Crowsnest Highway has just reopened. A single lane was opened to alternate traffic ahead of schedule on Friday, although only essential vehicles are allowed.

It remained open through the weekend, but transportation officials announced Monday that it was closed again.

Officials said washout was reported between Old Hope Princeton Way and Frontage Road. They did not say where on the 130km stretch of road the washout had occurred.

Crews were able to open sections of highways 1, 7 and 99, but these sections are also only available to people traveling for reasons deemed necessary.
