Beijing city bans eating in restaurants as China’s Covid control tightens

BEIJING – Two months since China’s latest Covid outbreak began, many businesses in the country’s two largest cities by GDP face new or existing restrictions on operations.

Over the weekend, the Beijing capital government closed amusement parks and banned dining in restaurants to control Covid – just as the 5-day holiday was underway. During last year’s vacation, Domestic tourism revenue nationwide has more than doubled year-on-year, according to official data.

Meanwhile, Shanghai, which is subject to some of the strictest lockdowns across the city, has shown some signs of easing restrictions over the past few days.

On Saturday, the city announced another 1,188 companies to its whitelist to resume manufacturing operations. As for the initial list released in mid-April of 666 companies — including 247 foreign-funded companies — more than 80 percent have resumed operations, the city said.

Before the second list was released, the EU Chamber of Commerce in China said the white list “is a promising sign for Shanghai’s recovery.”

Bettina Schoen-Behanzin, vice president of the council and president of Shanghai, said the shortage of truck drivers and the shift of workers between the factory bubble and their homes remained a challenge. She estimated Friday that the logistics and supply chain challenges will last through the end of June.

As of Monday, the number of people in Shanghai subject to the most stringent stay-at-home orders had fallen to 2.5 million as of Monday, down from 5.3 million four days earlier, according to official figures. . On Sunday, the city government announced that six areas of Shanghai had contained the virus at the community level, but not most of the city’s central areas.

The city said it has built sites for regular virus testing.

On Monday, mainland China reported a drop in new symptomatic Covid cases, to 368 people from nearly 1,000 or so much more in recent weeks. Shanghai reported the most symptomatic cases, with 274 cases, while Beijing came in second with 51 new symptomatic cases.

While residents are not allowed to leave parts of the city under lockdown, businesses in other areas generally remain open to people who have tested negative for the virus within 48 hours. past hour.

Beijing conducted several rounds of mass testing last week. It also announced weekly checks would be required after the holiday for taking public transport or going to public areas such as supermarkets.

On Sunday, the city announced the opening of a centralized quarantine facility with 1,200 beds.
