Beijing, Shanghai re-apply some bans

BEIJING – China’s two largest cities are tightening some of the Covid-19 measures again, just days after easing them as the virus appeared to be under control.

Shanghai, which emerged from a two-month shutdown earlier this month, said on Thursday that seven of the city’s 16 districts will conduct mass testing this weekend, according to state media. Those areas include the financial district and downtown.

During the testing period, people in affected areas will have to stay at home until the testing is over, the city said in the comments section of an official release.

It is not clear to what extent other business restrictions will be imposed during the test. The implementation of Covid restrictions may also vary by residential area. Factories can often continue to operate if their workers live on site or operate in a bubble.

Minhang, one of seven counties and located near the outskirts of Shanghai, on Thursday asked residents to stay home during virus testing on Saturday.

As of Thursday, at least three districts in Beijing have ordered bars and some other entertainment venues to close until further notice. After the city reported a new confirmed Covid case on Wednesday, a handful of subsequent cases were linked to bars and nightclubs.

Beijing allowed restaurants on Monday to continue serving customers inside. only after allowing takeout or delivery for about a month. The latest outbreak in the capital began in late April.

Mainland China reported 30 new confirmed Covid cases for Thursday, including 15 in Inner Mongolia, where a small city went into lockdown last week after a few new Covid cases.

Universal Beijing Resort said earlier this week it planned to reopen on June 15 after temporarily closing in early May.

Shanghai Disneyland and Disneytown have been closed since late March. Some Shanghai Disney The resort’s retail areas and parks reopened on Friday.
