Belton man charged with child abduction, led police chase 100 mph

Jackson COUNTY, Mo. (KCTV) – A Belton man was charged in Monday’s AMBER Alert situation in which a vehicle was stolen from a Raytown gas station with a child inside.

Robert R. Mitchell, 34, was charged with child abduction and felony burglary. He remained at the Jackson County Detention Center Tuesday morning for $75,000.

Police say a father ran into the Phillips 66 gas station at 61st Street and Blue Ridge Boulevard in Raytown on Monday morning, leaving his car driving outside with his 2-year-old son inside. That’s when police say Mitchell stole the car, prompting the Missouri Highway Patrol to issue an AMBER Alert. A motorist noticed the vehicle on the road a short time later and called 911, leading to a police chase reaching speeds as high as 100 mph.

With the life of a child potentially hanging in the balance, and when authorities refused to let the vehicle go, police used a median to stop the vehicle on Highway 131 east. Pittsville. The suspect was arrested at the scene, and the child was brought home safely.

The boy’s father told police he ran into a gas station to heat up food for his son. Police warn the public to never leave their car unattended, especially when there are children inside.
