Belton Police Association pulls lottery AR-15 rifles at DARE fundraiser due to recent mass shootings

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – A golf tournament to benefit from the DARE program at Belton schools has been scheduled for June 9.

Belton Police Athletes Association, sponsored Tournaments for 30 years, has raised funds for the program by shooting.

Lieutenant Dan Davis said a few months ago the association decided to dial in an AR-15 rifle this year. That decision was withdrawn.

A gunman burst into an elementary school on March 24 in Uvalde, Texas, killing 19 children and two teachers in the United States. He was using an AR-15-style rifle, carrying multiple magazines.

Less than two weeks earlier, a gunman opened fire on a supermarket in Buffalo, New York, killing 10 people. Prosecutors said he was wearing body armor and armed with an AR-15-style rifle.

Belton police say that lottery winners must always receive their firearms through a federally licensed gun dealer that passes all applicable background checks. He also stressed that no one can get a gun without being able to buy the same gun “through the same means and same limitations as any citizen”.

Organizers with the Police Athletes Association will refund lottery ticket holders.

Tim York, a gun enthusiast who said he supports most of the Second Amendment issues, said it would be inappropriate to withdraw an AR-15 at any time for a youth employment program. centers like DARE.

“Pulling it was a step in the right direction,” York said. “There’s a lot we can raffle on here.”

Raven Wright, who was playing in the park with her daughter, said she felt like the painting sent a bad message.

“I think it’s unnecessary because it’s a gun and we get into all these tragedies because of guns,” Wright said.
