Benefits of connecting with nature

Benefits of connecting with nature

Since I moved to Austin, I have noticed that my cortisol levels have dropped A LOT. Austin has the most ‘motherland’ energy and being here gives me a lot of clarity. I can only connect with nature more than ever when I’m in Los Angeles.

COVID & quarantine make people realize how important it is to their souls to get out and be in nature. As for me, I can’t be an effective mother, wife or entrepreneur unless I go out.

Everything from outdoor yoga, grounding, conference calls while walking, swimming in our lake or pool – Austin is a city so close to nature.

However, you don’t have to be in a certain city to be in nature. There are tons of different tips and tricks for getting out with the family (& kids). Learn now about the benefits of connecting with nature & how:

Benefits of connecting with nature:

Support nervous system function

good for eyesight

increase energy

improve memory

emotional regulation

♡ reduce cortisol (stress hormone)

♡ increase creativity

♡ increase mindfulness by using 5 senses

♡ also increases gratitude and appreciation {through}

Top 5 ways to connect with nature:

touch a tree

This may sound random, but Michael is 1/4 Japanese and in Japanese culture they love to touch and hug trees. It’s extremely well-founded. Today, it’s called forest bathing and it’s also been shown to lower your heart rate and blood pressure. It is also good for the immune system and reduces stress.

According to the source, hugging a tree releases oxytocin, the hormone responsible for creating feelings of calm and emotional attachment. It also says that hugging a tree is really good for kids, emotionally and cognitively.

I know it sounds hippy but I always go out with Zaza and we touch a tree together. The benefits are insane and I have witnessed firsthand how calming it is.

♡grounding & grounding mat

So…landing is like walking, but you have to be barefoot. Bear with me…

Grounding, or ‘grounding’, whatever you want to call it, completely changed the game for me.

First, let’s start with this question: when was the last time you let your bare feet touch the ground? Not your marble or hardwood floors or your rug. I’m not even talking about your balcony. Realistic Earth – grass, sand, beach. 99% of people can’t even remember.

Basically, the underlying theory is that our bodies should be in contact with the earth as much as possible (just like when we’re not wearing shoes). Electrons in the form of free radicals (yuck- from wifi) build up in us and so direct contact with the earth balances this out with the opposite effect. Back in the day, this would happen naturally because we didn’t wear shoes…now we need to make it happen…But let’s dig deeper.

Let’s take science:

So it basically allows your skin to be exposed to the ions of the earth. My absolute favorite way to do this is to put my feet in the sand. You should know that I even do this to my daughter. I would take her little feet and hands and make sure they hit the ground as often as possible.

Grounding way:

++ Go outside and put your feet on grass, sand or dirt.

++ Ground mat.

The grounding mat I have is from HealthyLine. Basically, this mat brings you hot stone therapy, far infrared therapy, negative ion therapy & photon light therapy. You wrap it around your body and crushed Amethysts provide a soothing effect. Amethyst emits a strong and steady stream of negative ions and promotes better health and overall quality of life.

The benefits of negative ions are unreal: purifying your surroundings, resisting the disturbance of positive ions (toxins, chemicals), attracting harmful particles in the air and pulling them to the ground, Supports detoxification of excess waste in the body, clears your mind.

Anyway, as I mentioned, the mat has a lot of other very beneficial therapies. The ions from the crystals make you feel magical.

This rug is a bit expensive, so I’ll give you the code! It’s an investment, but if you’re healthy it’s really a must-have. You can use the code THESKINNY10GIFT for 10% off, free shipping and free gifts.

It’s the perfect mat to meditate or do the Wim Hof breathing exercise. This is actually a recommendation from my facialist in San Diego, Mo @heal.theygodwoman. She places it on her face bed so that when clients lie down they will receive this earthing energy. If you are a beautician or masseuse, this is a great idea.

You can also put it under your bed sheet at home to get all the benefits of grounding.

Benefits of grounding:

♡ Reduce inflammation.

♡ Improve sleep.

♡ Improve immunity.

♡ Reduce some risk factors for cardiovascular disease.

♡ Pain relief.

♡ Accelerated recovery time.

♡ Helps relieve menstrual pain.

♡ Reduces the electric field induced on the body.

♡ Improves glucose regulation.

♡ Reduce the index of osteoporosis.

♡ Reduce anxiety & depression.

♡ Supports adrenal health.

♡ Can really cure a hangover. LAUGH

♡ conference calls while you walk

Working outside, while you’re walking and physically active, surrounded by trees is a good way to passively multitask. If you haven’t heard of this, it’s when you’re doing something productive AND something passive at the same time.

Examples of passive multitasking: listening to an educational podcast while folding clothes, answering emails while walking on the treadmill, replying to direct messages while you are at the pedicure spa – you get it.

outdoor exercise

Recently, I took my yoga mat out and practiced there. If you can’t exercise outdoors (it could be too hot or too cold), try to exercise near a window.

I’m telling you that the gym that I go to is a very ‘open’ space around my windows so you can see nature and that makes all the difference.

The same goes for meditation. If you can’t or don’t want to meditate outside, choose an indoor space where you get some natural light. ♡ Swimming, Sauna & The Cold Plunge

We’ve been spending a lot of time in our pool lately because Zaza is obsessed. Also, Melissa Wood has this 19-minute pool workout that’s great for your butt. Transcendental meditation is also really good when done in water.

Being in the pool is a way to be in nature, have time to yourself, have time with your daughter, and work out. So enter it now.

Side note: if you’ve just had a spray tan, wait 3 days before going swimming so your tan doesn’t get as severe.

Outdoor barrel saunas are also something I love. I believe most are made of cedar & IT MUST be outdoors. The indoor sauna for me always smells bad. I can’t explain it, but I’m not a fan of indoor saunas.

Sauna eliminates toxins, helps clean skin, good blood circulation, helps sleep well, supports recovery after exercise & also helps relieve stress. Yes please.

Ok, and now one of my favorite things about it lately. Cold plunge. Our Cold Plunge is indoors but I’m thinking of buying one for outside as well. The thought of going outdoors really excites me.

Cold Plunge is another investment in your health, so Ryan, the founder, has a $100 discount for all TSC readers with code SKINNYPLUNGE at thecoldplunge.com.

Benefits of cold soak:

♡ Accelerate muscle recovery & injury

Reduce inflammation

♡Supports a healthy immune system

♡ Improve lymphatic circulation

♡ Increases red blood cell count & growth hormone levels

♡ Improved Endurance & Recovery

♡ Improve heart health

♡ Improve sleep & reduce stress

Many benefits are being discovered

So yes you have it. All the ways you can get out on the ground and connect with nature. Would love to know the creative ways you create space during the day to get out.

Nothing is perfect and no two days are exactly the same. All the parents out there know that when you have a baby, you need to find times in the day to take care of yourself. Touch a tree, put your foot in the sand, jump in a lake, whatever.

OH !! Speaking of feet in the sand…I was just on the Tea With Publicity podcast & Alyssa is saying she can never go to the beach because she lives in NYC. I told her to get a box of cat litter, go to her parents’ beach house, fill it with sand, and put it under the table so she could put her feet in it while working. LAUGH. As you can see, we’re being creative here. Do what for you.

If all else fails, just put some natural sound on your speakers. It is meditation & very beautiful sound. It’s a great sound to wake up to.

Peace, love & trees,

x, Lauryn

+ if you are meditating check out my favorite sound bowl.

++ Bring both the outside and the inside with the finest wooden bath mats.
