Best movie of 2021: ‘Encanto’ tops box office again

Leftovers are on the menu for moviegoers in North America this weekend. “Encanto,” “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” and “House of Gucci” repeat in the top three, according to studio estimates on Sunday. All three movies are showing exclusively in theaters.

The weekend after Thanksgiving is usually pretty quiet at the box office, and this year was no exception as new films like “Flee” and “Benedetta” were shown in limited numbers. Disney’s “Encanto,” an animated story with original music by Lin-Manuel Miranda, earned $12.7 million to take the top spot, down 53 percent from its opening weekend. To date, globally, it has earned $116.1 million.

“Ghostbusters: Afterlife” took second place in its third weekend with $10.4 million, having just crossed the $100 million threshold. And Ridley Scott’s split from the “House of Gucci” title, which stars Lady Gaga and Adam Driver, came in at number three in its second weekend with $6.8 million from 3,477 locations, lifting domestic gross to $33.6 million.

In other notable screenings, Warner Bros. brought “Dune” back to IMAX screens this weekend. High-end monitors account for more than half of the company’s $1.8 million in domestic earnings.

Neon’s animated documentary “Flee” also opened in four theaters, grossing $25,033. The film is about a man who fled Afghanistan as a child in the 1980s.

Things will begin next week when Steven Spielberg takes on the dance performance “West Side Story” in theaters nationwide.
