Biden administration seeks to boost production of Covid-19 vaccine to increase global supply

“We stand ready to provide vaccine manufacturers that have demonstrated their ability to produce mRNA vaccines with substantial government resources to help them expand their domestic infrastructure and capacity (e.g., facilities, equipment, staff or training) to produce an additional 1 billion doses, an administration official said.

The official added, “In the short term, this will make a substantial amount of the Covid-19 vaccine cheaply available for use globally and in the long term it will help establish the sustainable production in the country to quickly produce vaccines for future threats.. We hope the companies will implement this plan to help more people here vaccinate at home and all around the world. “

The US Department of Health and Human Services intends to issue a “request for information” to private companies to solicit their feedback on how best to proceed. The authorities are looking for a quick response and expect a response within 30 days of the request. Essentially, the federal government will subsidize these efforts to produce one billion doses of the mRNA vaccine made by Pfizer and Moderna by the middle of next year, an official said.

The US has pledged to fund more than 1 billion Covid-19 vaccines to low- and middle-income countries around the world to help end the pandemic. The president has also called on other world leaders to increase funding of vaccines to countries that need them most to help end the pandemic.

The President also said the $2 billion U.S. contribution would go to the global coronavirus vaccine initiative and would support COVAX, an initiative led by Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, and World Health Organization and Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations. Biden also committed an additional $2 billion in funding depending on contributions from other countries and dosage distribution goals being met.

The effort to vaccinate the rest of the world is ongoing as the Biden administration pushes as many Americans to get vaccinated as possible. The latest data available from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that the risk of being hospitalized with Covid-19 in unvaccinated adults is nearly 19 times higher than in fully vaccinated adults.

According to Johns Hopkins University, the US currently has an average of more than 84,000 new Covid-19 infections per day, an increase of about 13% from the previous week. According to data from the US Department of Health and Human Services, hospitalizations have remained relatively flat, but hospitalizations are growing sharply – up at least 50% from a week ago – in 10 states, most mostly in the Northwest and Mountain regions.

The US Food and Drug Administration is also expected to decide on Friday whether to authorize emergency use of Covid-19 boosters for all adults. A CDC spokesperson said Tuesday that CDC vaccine advisors will also meet on Friday to discuss expanding eligibility for Pfizer’s Covid-19 vaccine. These advisers typically only meet once a vaccine has been approved by the FDA, which further suggests that a decision on booster shots could be made before Friday’s meeting.
