Big 12 hires Brett Yormark as commissioner

The Big 12 made a big move on Wednesday, announcing that former Roc Nation COO Brett Yormark is the conference’s new commissioner.

Like Associated Press details, Yormark was previously the CEO of Brooklyn Nets and also worked in NASCAR before joining Jay-Z’s entertainment company. His new position as Big 12 commissioner will be his first job in the college athletic field.

“I’m here to listen, learn, find ways to add value, add resources, and try to help shed light on the importance of college athletics,” Yormark said. “I look forward to leveraging my experience and network together with our presidents, prime ministers and sporting directors to shape the future of the Big 12 brand and underline our collective strength. “

Yormark’s recruitment comes as the Big 12 grapple with significant changes on the horizon. Oklahoma and Texas, two huge college shows that draw huge numbers of TV viewers, accepted an invitation to join the SEC after the 2024-25 season, at the same time the conference’s agreement with ESPN and Fox Sports expired. The Big 12 responded by adding BYU, UCF, Cincinnati and Houston to the conference.

The common hope is that Yormark’s combination of sports and entertainment experiences will help smooth the transition, while boosting its popularity.

“Brett is one of the most skilled and knowledgeable executives in sports and entertainment,” said NBA commissioner Adam Silver. “His decades of operating experience, unwavering work ethic and strong industry relationships will be of immense value to the Big 12, schools and fans.”

The plan is for Yormark to fully transform into the location by August.
