Bilkis Bano said she was “speechless” and “paralyzed” after 11 men who raped her during the 2002 Gujarat riots were freed. “I trust the highest courts. I trust the system and I’m slowly learning to live with my trauma,” she said. On August 15, all 11 people sentenced to life in prison walked out of the Godhra sub-prison after the BJP government in Gujarat allowed them to be released under an amnesty policy. Seven members of Bilkis Bano’s family, including her toddler daughter, were murdered. The woman, who was five months pregnant, was then gang raped.
