Bill Miller Bar-BQ manager donates kidney to save customer’s life

San Antonio – Cecilia Canizanes was diagnosed with kidney failure in 2010. Since she went on dialysis, she must have given out dozens of donation cards to ask friends, family and strangers if they could. suitable to help her get a kidney or not.

Sophia Parrish, a manager at Bill Miller Bar-BQ, takes pride in her customer service. That’s how she knew Cannes.

Their friendship began when she asked Canizanes why she only wanted a little water with every order.

“Canizanes started saying, ‘Hello ma’am, how are you?’ And we just like, completely and completely, the click,” said Parrish.

That friendship developed and continued over the months. For Parrish, Canizanes reminded her of one of her favorite aunts. So when she met him, she asked to be tested to see if they were compatible.

“I do anything, anything to help anyone. And if I can help someone, I will. And that’s what I did. And I said, the least I can do is the least to see if I get along,” Parrish said. To her surprise, she was a good fit and after a conversation with her family, she decided to continue donating.

“It’s our nature to help people, because if you can’t help people, then why are we here? You know, we need to help each other out as much as we can,” Parrish said.

Both are recovering well.

Michelle Segovia, communications director for the Texas Organ Sharing Coalition, said this year has been successful in attracting more people to become registered donors.

“They had a chance to save eight lives through organ donation,” she said.
