It started out as an ordinary local chip shop, now it’s arguably the most popular chip shop on the planet – certainly the most popular one on TikTok, after all.

Owner Kamal Gandhi, 70, now has a large clientele, some of whom have clearly come from France, the US and even Australia.
So: how did a local potato chip shop go from little lamb to Charlie Potatoes?
First known mention
Binley Mega Chippy was first discovered on the internet in 2009 according to Know Your Meme, a website dedicated to documenting various online phenomena.
A Twitter account named Dave Rutt posted: “You’ve been to Binley Mega Chippy. Eat Pukka Pie and Chips. Steak and Kidney. Lush.”
But it was more than a decade before the store sold chips really shoot for fame.
2022 will be Binley’s big year
As the years passed, more and more tweets mentioning Binley Mega Chippy began to appear, but the diner continued to unfold in relative obscurity, not knowing what would happen.
The viral hysteria about the fast-food outlet only flared up until early 2022, when it was featured in a slideshow of UK chicks on TikTok on April 26.
As reported by Know Your Meme, in a month, the video received about 82,000 views and 11,000 likes.
On May 18, an account named binleymegachippyfan53 posted two TikToks about the chip venture and continued to do so throughout the rest of May.
An ironic internet trend was born and soon it went viral.
Other TikTok users also joined, many changing their usernames to refer to Binley Mega Chippy.
And then a song…
Decades of research and millions of pounds of advertising have shown society that a good jingle can cause a product to skyrocket in price, and the same seems to be true for chip shops.
On May 25, binleymegachippyfan53 posted a 10-second clip with a still image of Binley Mega Chippy, accompanied by a cheerful jingle.
It’s like this: “Binley Me-ga Chiiiipyyy, Binley Me-ga Chiiiipyyy, Binley Me-ga Chiiiipyyyyyyyyyy … Binley Mega Chippy” – and that’s the tune of For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow.
As of early June, that TikTok video had 1.7 million views and has spawned various spin-offs and remixes.
Oh, and it will stick in your head for the rest of your life.
Overall, the hashtag #BinleyMegaChippy has 495.2 million views.
And, naturally, people were visiting from literally all over
People walked for hours to visit Binley’s most famous dining spot, with customers lining up at the door, to the delight of owner Kamal Gandhi, who said it was “crazy” crazy”.
He told his local newspaper he was “so glad” people were loving the food and looking forward to coming back.
There are reports of people traveling from France, Portugal and even Texas and Australia to visit what may be the most famous chip shop in the world right now.
And about that jingle…
A quick Twitter search revealed glowing comments like: “I’m not a man praying but I’m asking God to please get the Binley Mega Chippy song out of my head.”
“Binley mega chippy’s stupid tiktok song is ruining my day.”
“I can’t get rid of binley’s mega chippy song.”
