Bixby students send a message to their mentor during graduation

BIXBY, Okla. – It’s graduation season and as students wrap up their senior year, a graduation photo has received a lot of attention.

It shows dozens of Bixby High School graduates on their phones during the graduation ceremony.

“At the graduation ceremony last week, Mr. Adams from the beginning just made an announcement to everyone there and told all the students, asked them to take out their phones and everyone take a selfie. , now send it to someone who got you here,” said Ray Blake, head wrestling coach at Bixby High School.

The students thanked their teachers, counselors and parents.

“When we made that announcement, after 10 to 15 seconds or so, I felt my pocket start to gurgle,” Blake said.

Blake said he received not one, two, but three texts from some of his students. This is Coach Ray’s first year at Bixby and in Oklahoma. He says student texts are more special to him after moving here from around the country last year.

“As a coach or an educator, you don’t do it for the money, and you don’t do it for recognition or fame,” says Blake. ”

He says he hopes his students will take this graduate lesson out into the real world – understanding the impact they can have on others.

“Remember the lessons and values they’ve learned at Bixby and their home up to this point and take those with you and realize: you can’t get there on your own. It takes a village. And be grateful for the opportunities and the people that have made them where they are today.”
