For millennia, black spruces (Picea mariana) have been a standard presence throughout Arctic forests in North America, however they’re now being threatened by extra frequent and extreme wildfires.
Like many different timber in these forests, the spruce – an evergreen conifer – is determined by hearth for regeneration. As hearth strikes throughout the panorama, the timber’ cones, that are coated in a waxy coat, warmth up and slowly open to launch their seeds onto the brand new seedbed.
