Blinken discusses trade, migration with Mexican counterpart | Politics News

Top US diplomat Antony Blinken arrives in Mexico City for high-level economic talks with Mexican government officials.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken discussed “issues of mutual concern” with his Mexican counterpart, including drug trafficking, migration and trade, as top officials from the two countries meet for high-level economic talks in Mexico City.

The US State Department said in a statement Monday that Blinken noted his “appreciation for cooperation with Mexico” in his discussions with Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard.

“They also discussed efforts in the region to support Haitian people as well as Mexico and the United States continue to work together to create a more effective United Nations,” State Department Spokesperson Ned Price said in the statement.

Blinken was joined by US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo and other Biden administration officials on a trip to the Mexican capital for this year’s US-Mexico High-Level Economic Dialogue.

“Last year, our two presidents agreed to restart high-level economic dialogue. Together they recognize that a strong US-Mexico relationship is important,” said Blinken speak in talks.

President of Mexico Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador issued a conciliatory note earlier in the day on a great dispute with the United States via Mexican energy policysays Washington has adopted a more respectful attitude towards its position.

In July, the US trade representative requested dispute resolution talks with Mexico, arguing that Lopez Obrador’s attempt to tighten state control over energy market unfair to American companies and potentially in violation of regional trade agreements.

Lopez Obrador, who has seen his energy policy as a matter of national sovereignty, at the time responded defiantly, saying he would defend Mexico’s position at the military parade. Independence takes place next Friday.

However, on Monday, he said he would no longer address the energy dispute in his speech on Friday because US President Joe Biden had responded positively to his concerns.

“There is a different tone. Have a respectful attitude. Rather, it’s a reaffirmation of respect for our national sovereignty,” Lopez Obrador said at a regular news conference, referring to a letter he said he received from Biden.

I am pleased to welcome Antony Blinken, US Secretary of State and Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo. Welcome!

The U.S. energy claim, to which Canada immediately joined, is arguably the most important dispute to resolve under United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) since the North American trade agreement went into effect in 2020.

If left unaddressed, it could lead to the imposition of huge trade tariffs against Mexico, according to analysts.

Ebrard, Mexico’s foreign minister, said Monday’s talks had been very productive and that Mexico had been invited to join the US effort to boost semiconductor and electromechanical output in North America. .

Ebrard added that the energy dispute was not central to Monday’s agenda and that it made up “no more than 5%” of conversation in the presidential palace.

Washington is increasingly looking to the Mexican government to help deal with the growing number of incoming refugees and migrants US-Mexico border.

But the relationship between the two countries has been tested in recent months after Lopez Obrador infuriate Biden by refusing to participate in the Summit of the Americas in Los Angeles on the grounds that Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua were not invited.

That motivated the President of the United States invite his Mexican partner visited the White House in July to repair relationships.
