BMW details the 3.0 CSL’s two-week production process

Launched in November 2022 to celebrate BMW USA 50th birthday, limited edition 3.0 CSL about to go into production. Only 50 units will be produced, so the coupe’s production process is very different from the production process. M4‘S. BMW car showing enthusiasts how to make models.

Production will take place in and near the German company’s Dingolfing facility, which also manufactures 4, 5, 7 And 8 series. The process begins with a standard M4 CSL in-house modified body; According to BMW, the wheel arches are significantly enlarged using special welding and beading processes. It is painted in the same paint shop as regular production cars, then it is transported to a special station, where workers use stencils to glue the distinctive red and blue stripes. Meanwhile, parts such as bumpers and roof panels are painted at a BMW factory.

Everything comes together in a dedicated area set up specifically for 3.0 CSL at an offsite site operated by the Dingolfing factory. BMW assembled a team of 30 experts who made the necessary modifications (such as modifying the axles to take center locks) and assembled each car largely by hand. All told, it took BMW about two weeks to build a 3.0 CSL; Making 50 cars would take several months.

The finished cars will then be shipped back to the Dingolfing factory for testing and final inspection – BMW will specifically drive every 3.0 CSL on the factory track. Instead of sending the finished car to its lucky new owner, the company will ask buyers to pick up the car in person at BMW Welt in Munich. It’s a long way from our shores, but none of the 50 examples are planned for the United States.
