BMW is testing a four-engine layout for performance EVs

BMW is testing a four-motor powertrain for future M performance EVs, the automaker announced Wednesday in a press release.

The automaker has introduced the M Performance i4 M50 and iX M60 diet models, but not a dedicated all-electric M model that can stop all stops. The prototype powertrain — revealing an i4 development mule — hints at what could power the first of those models.

BMW says it is testing both the powertrain and related chassis control systems to help better distribute power, the automaker claims. BMW notes that the electric motor’s infinite torque distribution allows for great flexibility, says the system, which measures power from sensors, as well as steering angle and accelerator pressure, to generate optimal amount of power.

The i4 M50 development mule uses a number of elements from the petrol-powered BMW M3 and M4 (shared platform) to improve cooling and torsional stiffness, as well as create space for the four engines. Two motors power each axle, which means each wheel has its own motor.

BMW’s use of a four-motor powertrain for a performance EV is not an efficient approach; it adds weight; and it’s quite novel, as many other manufacturers are maxing out three engines. Lucid has been developing a Air’s three-engine versionand Tesla previously introduced the three-engine Model S Plaid +, although the latter has been effectively canceled.

The GMC Hummer EV also uses three engines, enough to help the roughly 9,000-pound truck accelerate from 0-60 mph in 3.0 seconds with “Watts to Freedom” (WTF) mode. And three engines Audi E-Tron WILL versions are available, but they are rare and we haven’t had a chance to drive them yet — let alone go back to the dual-engine versions.

Rivian offers a four-motor powertrain for the R1T pickup truck and R1S SUV but suggests that the layout is very expensive to build—Though it is teased to be special Turn Tank and K-Turn mode with it. Tesla has also promised a four-engine version of the Cybertruckwhile Lordstown Endurance is expected to use four-wheel motors.

So if BMW’s four-engine powertrain were to be produced in a future M model, aside from exclusive supercar makers like Rimac, it could be the first of its kind aimed at children. canyon roads and racetracks rather than construction sites and off-road trails. Keep stable.
