North America/Europe
The Western design for Castlevania II: Belmont’s Revenge features the protagonist, presumably Christopher Belmont, swinging the franchise’s signature whip at enemies sneaking out of the iron gates. The setting here is particularly impressive, displaying many natural structures and landmarks. The logo itself was impressive – literally – because it’s surrounded by a bunch of lightning. This is a nice one, really!
Japan
Meanwhile, the Japanese approach is very much reminiscent of their earlier box art efforts, which focused on bringing more characters into a more abstract composition. The main image itself doesn’t take up the entire “canvas”, with the game’s logo and various icons placed on a white background. Needless to say, however, the picture here is stunningly beautiful, and Dracula himself looks intimidating, looming above Christopher Belmont in the foreground. Oof, this will be a touch choice!
