BR man crashes stolen ambulance into LSP unit after multiple parish chase


BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – Louisiana State Police soldiers say a man stole an ambulance early Friday morning, leading law enforcement in a chase through several parishes before when crashing into Baton Rouge.

Officials said Jeremy McCurley, 38, of Baton Rouge, will be charged with several criminal counts, including theft and possession of a stolen motor vehicle, heavier flight from officers and another traffic violation when he was discharged from the hospital.

The Parish Sheriff’s Office St. Charles said their delegates were called to St. Charles Parish Ochsner in Boutte at around 3 a.m. in connection with a stolen vehicle. According to investigators, deputies learned McCurley was being taken to hospital for ambulance treatment and just as paramedics were about to unload him, he jumped into the driver’s seat and drove off. According to TPr. Taylor Scrantz with LSP, soldiers were later informed that an SCPSO deputy was chasing a stolen Acadian Ambulance on I-10. He added that the sheriff’s office decided to end the pursuit for reasons of public safety. However, a short time later, the Parish Sheriff’s Office of St. John saw the ambulance and began a second chase, Scrantz noted. The LSP said the chase continued into St. James, where soldiers also tried to block the ambulance.

Officials said McCurley refused to stop and continued west on I-10 toward East Baton Rouge Parish. However, soldiers said McCurley still refused to stop and intercept a marked patrol unit of the Louisiana State Police.

According to Scrantz, another soldier crashed into the ambulance and ended the chase. He said McCurley then ran away and jumped off the Perkins Road flyover, resulting in moderate injuries from the fall. McCurley was taken to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center.
