Brendan Dassey Supporters Work to Free Convicted Killer

The fight to free Brendan Dassey continues. Dassey and his uncle Steven Avery were convicted and convicted in the 2005 murder of Teresa Halbach in Manitowoc County. Dassey was sentenced to life in prison, likely to be pardoned as early as 2048. Years later, Netflix’s documentary “Making a Murderer” still resonates with people around the world. “I watched the documentary like everyone else and I felt really compelled to try to do something to help him,” said Becca Nash, who lives in Arizona and founded a Facebook group called ‘Brendan Talks’ ‘ said. Nash forms a group so people can help her lift Dassey’s spirits in prison and try to get legislators to free him. Nash said she talks to Dassey weekly by phone. “They have never met face to face. “We talk about movies, music. He likes Pokémon, anime, manga. We talk about TV shows that he likes.” She has come to support the Wisconsin protests for Dassey, and she regularly manages activities for her Facebook group to participate in. Things like eating Dassey’s favorites, sending him pictures of their art contests, and lighting candles in his name. “He’s so nice, so sweet, he won’t hurt a single person,” Nash said. “I believe he is 100% innocent.” Nash also created hundreds of postcards for people to send to lawmakers, like Governor Tony Evers, in an effort to free Dassey. To date, Nash says she has made more than 500 postcards. Another member of the group, Elisabeth Graff-Kettler, lives in Bristol in County Kenosha. She said she learned about Dassey’s case after watching the Netflix documentary. “To me, it was like horrible child abuse,” says Graff-Kettler. “I mean, this is a kid. He knows he’s innocent. No one is trying to help him.” “We went in there, tied her up. He stabbed her and told me to slit her throat,” Dassey said in the taped confession. Graff-Kettler kept a photograph of Dassey along with a framed photograph of her deceased son. She says she has been writing to Dassey and Evers for years. “I’ve had a lot of sleepless nights thinking about this kid,” says Graff-Kettler. “Worried about what they’re doing to him and what it’s doing to him, mentally?” In 2019, Dassey’s eligibility for pardon was denied. “I sat there and I just sobbed,” said Graff-Kettler. Since taking office in 2019, the governor has received 2,200 contacts related to Dassey’s case, a spokesperson for Evers said. People like Graff-Kettler and Nash who are personally invested. “Do I think a postcard will change (Evers)’s mind? Probably not, but I want him to know that there are people across America, all over the world, who believe that a Great injustice has been done and he needs to fix it,” Nash said. A spokesperson for the Evers office said the pardon advisory panel’s eligibility criteria have not changed in Dassey’s case and that Evers is not considering a reduced sentence at this time.
