Brett Favre’s charity supports children and cancer patients accused of donating charity funds to their alma mater

ESPN reports that Brette Favre’s foundation is allegedly giving his alma mater, the University of Southern Mississippi (USM), an initial $130,000 to cancer patients, The Athletic reported.

Reports say the school received the money around the same time he called for welfare funds from the state of MS to build a volleyball facility at USM, where his daughter also attended.

Favre 4 Hope’s mission is to support “for underprivileged children, with disabilities and breast cancer patients” and to receive donations from donors to help with that cause.

Details of Favre 4 Hope Tax Documents

According to tax returns, the former NFL player’s organization donated $60,000 to the USM Athletic Foundation in 2018. But other organizations received only $10,000.

ESPN also says that documents it viewed show Favre 4 Hope donating $46,817 to the USM Athletic Foundation in 2019. The Mississippi Special Olympics also received a $11,000 donation.

In 2020, $26,175 was given to USM by Favre 4 Hope, and no other organization received more than $10,000 that year.

ESPN also says that USM received a total of more than 45,000 while his daughter signed up between 2011-2017.

Favre’s lawyer speaks out

Bud Holmes, Favre’s attorney, told ESPN:

He has been very generous with Miss South since he played there. Specific things [the donations in question] I don’t know, but I know he always gives back, which most athletes don’t.

It’s not clear if this is a legal issue, but it could pose an ethical issue.

Laurie Styron, chief executive officer of monitoring group Charity Watch spoke to ESPN, and stated that there is a “moral obligation to spend money the way sponsors intend.”

If a charity tells donors it is raising money for breast cancer but then donates the proceeds to a sports facility, the people running the organization will not fulfill their obligations. in spending the nonprofit’s donations the way the donors intended.

She went on to say that charities are not “personal piggy banks” and that celebrities shouldn’t be getting free cards.

Authorities did not charge Favre with a crime.
