Brian Laundrie’s Parents’ Missing Gun Not Made Public

Brian Laundrie’s parents discovered a missing handgun when they voluntarily turned the gun over to law enforcement on the same day they notified authorities that their son According to the family’s attorney, Steven Bertolino, has gone missing.

Bertolino’s comments come days after a Florida medical examiner confirmed Laundrie, the subject of a week-long manhunt following the disappearance of his fiancée Gabby Petito, died of his own killed by a bullet shot in the head.

Laundrie’s remains were found in a Florida nature reserve last month.

Laundrie’s parents, Chris and Roberta Laundrie, turned over the gun to law enforcement on September 17 – the same day they reported their son missing – when they discovered an empty handgun in its container, Bertolino told CNN Friday.

FBI and North Port, Florida, police were present at the time of discovery, he said.

When asked why information about the missing gun was not shared publicly, Bertolino told CNN that he and law enforcement agreed “it’s best if that information isn’t made public.”

“Imagine, given the frenzied atmosphere at the time, if the public thought Brian had a gun,” Bertolino said. “I can’t say why (law enforcement) didn’t release the information but we talked about it at the time and I believe they felt the same way I did.”

CNN has reached out to the FBI for comment. North Harbor Police did not immediately respond to a request for comment Friday.

Laundrie disappeared from his parents’ North Port home just days after Petito was reported missing. The couple traveled around the country for the summer in a convertible van before Laundrie returned home without Petito on September 1.

Laundrie disappeared days after Petito was reported missing, sparking a multi-site investigation and garnering social media attention. Petito’s remains were found in Wyoming on September 19, and her death was treated as homicide by strangulation.

Meanwhile, authorities have focused the search for Laundrie at the vast Florida nature reserve, where his remains were last found on October 20. On Friday, Bertolino said he was. It is not known whether a gun was found near Brian’s remains or property.

While the Florida District 12 medical examiner’s office confirmed Laundrie had died by suicide, the office said it would not make the autopsy report public “until the law enforcement investigation is complete.” , the office said in a statement.

The circumstances that led to Petito’s death remain a mystery. The FBI describes her fiancé as a “person with an interest” in her murder, but he is not facing charges in her death.

A federal grand jury convicted him of using two other people’s accounts in the days after Petito died.
