Britney Spears’ 2001 VMAs Performance
Britney Spears made fashion and music history when she performed in 2001 MTV Video Music Awards wears a green bra and low-cut shorts. The singer was just 19 when she sang “I’m a Slave 4 U” in a decorated two-piece while holding a 25-pound albino Burmese python. Nearly 21 years later, that memory still hasn’t faded.
Spears took the stage in a rich green, cutout bra with pink jewels adorning the center and straps. To show off her see-through belly piercing, she teamed it with low-waisted shorts accented with a floating butterfly print and jewel detailing at the waist. The tights also have multiple scarves attached around her waist that can sway as she dances around the stage. Her on-stage look is the work of renowned costume designers Kurt and Bart, who also styled Spears’ flight attendant uniform in the “Toxic” music video.
Spears completed her look with a pair of jewel-encrusted heels and a jewel-encrusted tattoo. That night, Spears invigorated the audience not only with her voice but also with her performance skills. Who else can sing and handle a snake expertly at the same time?
Ahead of the 2022 VMAs, appreciate the details of Spears’ famous performance interface.
