Brittney Griner’s legal team files an appeal following her recent conviction

Many people were shocked around the world after the WNBA star Brittney Griner was sentenced to 9 years in prison in Russia after she was found guilty of drugs. Her legal team has now filed an appeal following the ruling.

Based on ESPNOn Monday, Russian news agencies quoted lawyer Maria Blagovolina as saying that an appeal had been filed, however, the terms of the appeal were not immediately clarified. After Brittney was convicted earlier this month, her legal team planned to appeal the conviction, and under Russian law, they have at least 10 days to file an appeal.

Blagovolina and co-lawyer Alexander Boykov say Brittney’s convictions are too many, and that people who have been found guilty of similar cases have all been sentenced to at least five years, with a large portion of them pardoned.

As many of you know, Brittney pleaded guilty in the case and admitted to having a vape container containing cannabis oil. However, she shared that she did not intend to leave them in her luggage. She said she was in a hurry and that’s how they definitely ended up in her pocket. She was in Russia playing basketball during the WNBA break and was stopped and detained at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport when the container was discovered.

Negotiations over a prisoner swap occurred with the name of Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout mentioned.

Based on CNNRussian news agency TASS reported that the Director of the North American Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry Alexander Darchiev spoke about the discussions about the prisoner swap and said,

“This rather sensitive issue of the swap of convicted Russian and American citizens is being discussed through channels identified by our President. These individuals are, indeed, under discussion. The Russian side has long sought to free Viktor Bout. The details should be left to professionals, following the ‘do no harm’ principle. “

Brittney was detained in February of this year, and she was officially labeled “wrongly detained” by the United States in May.
