Bruins’ DeBrusk not with team after fracture of fibula

After scoring two goals to become the hero of the Winter Classic, Jake DeBrusk can miss some serious time.

The Boston Bruins forward was seen wearing walking boots after the game, and Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli is reporting that DeBrusk broke his fibula.

Head Coach Jim Montgomery confirm with reporter including Boston Globe’s Matt Porter that DeBrusk is not on the trip, but will update with more details on Thursday. Chris Wagner expected to be called back in his place.

If the injury occurred in an early blocked shot as many speculated, it would mean DeBrusk scored the winning goal at Fenway Park with a broken leg.

The 26-year-old has completely rejuvenated this season with 16 goals and 30 points in 36 games, after some difficult years with the Bruins.

One exchange request, lots of rumors and a season in which he scored just 5 goals, he once again looks like the strong, skilled striker Boston hopes they get with the pick. 14th in 2015.

His removal from the squad is a huge blow to the Bruins, especially since they are tightening the salary cap.

If he misses more than ten games, they could switch him to a long-term injury reserve for a bit more flexibility.

But that doesn’t really allow them to get a replacement, unless he’s going to miss the rest of the season. Instead, the team will have to be a little more creative in the arrangement of the lineup and replace DeBrusk’s attacking position.
