Brussels family lost everything in house fire

DOOR COUNTY, Wis. (WBAY) – After a devastating fire left two Algoma teachers with nothing, two different communities are working to help.

Fire razed a home in the Door District community of Brussels on Tuesday, leaving the family without pets and belongings.

At 2:40 p.m., crews responded to the scene in the Pit and Gorge area. BUG Fire said they discovered the house was engulfed in flames and began to collapse.

“The residence is a total loss,” the ministry said.

Kandi and Chuck Bretl return from their teaching job to discover their house has been destroyed. They lost everything, including a dog and six kittens.

Fourth, things got worse when their stand-alone warehouse also caught fire.

Friends say that Chuck teaches 3rd grade and that Kandi is an aide who works with special education staff. They are described as “people who care and always do for others.”

A GoFundMe has been started for the couple. CLICK HERE to donate to GoFundMe.

We spoke with Algoma school superintendent Nick Cochart, who said the Bretls family are doing very well and are truly overwhelmed with the support they are receiving from their community. Residents in both Door and Kewaunee counties have increased.

Cochart said the overwhelming love for the family is not surprising as they have always been dedicated to their communities.

“In situations like this, I think we learn who matters. Above all, people matter and the way we treat each other and support each other will help us in the long run,” said Cochart.

Culver’s and Door Stop Amoco in Sturgeon Bay have announced 10% of restaurant sales and 5% of convenience store sales on Wednesday, February 23, will go to Bretls. Culver plans to deliver orders to Algoma and Sevastopol all day, but orders must be for 4 or more people and be called or emailed to the restaurant by noon on Tuesday, February 22. Information may be available. found on Door Stop Amoco’s Facebook Page.

The Brsussels-Union-Gardner Fire Department received help at the scene of the fire from the Southern Door, Sturgeon Bay, Casco and Luxemburg fire departments, Door County EMS, Door County Sheriff’s Department, and WPS. The fire brigade was on the scene in about five hours, cleaning up at 8pm

“BUG Fire would like to thank everyone who provided food and water to our firefighters,” the statement said on Facebook. “It is very much appreciated!”
