Buckingham Palace Aide Resigns Over ‘Unacceptable’ Comments Made to Black British Charity Boss

Buckingham Palace announced Wednesday that a member of their family has resigned after making “unacceptable and regrettable comments” at a reception hosted by Camilla, Queen consortto highlight abuse and domestic violence against women and girls.

The palace’s announcement comes after black British charity director Ngozi Fulani shared details of a shocking exchange that took place at a reception on Tuesday.

Fulani, CEO of London-based charity Sistah Space – an organization that supports Black women experiencing sexual abuse and domestic violence – said she was only present at the event. 10 minutes when an employee she identified as “Lady SH” began asking her questions about her racial heritage.

Fulani said staff pulled Fulani’s hair to see her nametag. “Where are you from?” she asked Fulani, according to the charity boss’s exchange account. When Fulani said she was from Sistah Space, the staff member replied, “No, where are you from?”

Fulani said she responded that the organization is based in Hackney, northeast London. “No,” the employee supposedly replied, “What part of Africa are you from?” Fulani said she explained she was born in the UK and is British, but the staff continued to insist: “No, but where are you really from, where are your people from?”

Mulani said she explained again that she is a British citizen and that her parents came to the UK in the 1950s. “Oh, I know we’ll get there eventually, you’re Caribbean! ” The employee is said to have responded. “No ma’am, I’m of African descent, Caribbean descent and British nationality,” Fulani said she replied.

A royal source confirmed to Britain daily mirror announced Wednesday that Lady Susan Hussey – a close aide to Camilla and godmother to Prince William – has left her family role. The 83-year-old was a close friend of the late Queen Elizabeth II.

Buckingham Palace has yet to confirm the identity of the resigning aide.

in one tweet, Fulani said the exchange was “so shocking” that she was “temporarily stunned and silent” about the incident. “I just stood at the edge of the room, smiling [and] brief interaction with the person who spoke to me until I could leave,” she added.

In a statement, Buckingham Palace said: “We take this incident extremely seriously and have investigated immediately to determine the full details.” The royal family added that they have reached out to Fulani to discuss her experience one-on-one should she wish.

“In the meantime, the individual concerned wishes to express his deep apologies for the harm caused and has immediately renounced his honorable role,” the statement added. “All members of the Household are being reminded of the diversity and inclusion policies they must adhere to at all times.”

Fulani was one of 300 guests invited to the palace for Camilla’s first major personal event since her husband ascended the British throne. The Queen spoke about the “global pandemic of violence against women” at the reception, which was also attended by Queens Raina of Jordan and Mathilde of Belgium, as well as Spice Girl Melanie B.
