Burkina Faso government expels senior UN official | United Nations News

Violence from various armed groups in Burkina Faso has displaced more than two million people from their homes.

Burkina Faso’s military government in a statement on Friday ordered senior United Nations official Barbara Manzi to leave the country immediately without giving a reason.

When contacted, a government spokesman did not immediately say why they labeled Manzi, the United Nations’ resident coordinator in Burkina Faso, as “persona non grata” and asked her to leave on Friday.

A spokesperson at United Nations headquarters did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Burkina Faso, one of the world’s poorest countries, has been engulfed in a conflict in which armed groups linked to al-Qaeda and the Islamic State group (ISIS) have killed thousands of civilians and created one of the continent’s fastest-growing humanitarian crises. .

Nearly two million people have been displaced and resided in makeshift camps, many run by the United Nations, scattered across the arid countryside.

The violence lasted about seven years, concentrated in the north and east, crippling local economies, causing mass famines and limiting access to aid organisations.

The UN has provided a number of essential services, including feeding thousands of malnourished children.

Manzi, who has experience in humanitarian operations in developing countries, was appointed to this position in Burkina Faso last year.
