Burning photo taken above an active volcano wins the 2022 Drone Photo Awards | World News


A stunning photo taken above an active volcano and compared to the Big Bang won this year’s Drone Photo Awards.

Armand Sarlangue captured the powerful image above the red-hot Fagradalsfjall volcano in Iceland, looking down into its molten abyss.

This photo was the overall winner of the Siena Awards drone photography competition and was selected by a jury from thousands of photos submitted by 2,624 participants from 116 countries.

Here are some of the category winners, runners-up and commended entries.

Urban category winner: Serhiy Vovk, Ukraine

Siena Awards: Drone Photo Awards 2022. URBAN: The 1st ranked rooftops of Kartoffelraekkerne Neighborhood by Serhiy Vovk Rooftops of the Kartoffelraekkerne neighborhood, in Oesterbro.  The neighborhood was built in the late 1800s for working-class families.  Today, it is one of the most sought after places in Copenhagen.

People category winner: Anindita Roy, Bangladesh

Siena Awards: Drone Photo Awards 2022. PERSON: Ranked 1st - Sleep on Anindita Roy Dhaka's boat located on the banks of the famous Buriganga River.  Dhaka's Sadarghat River Port is the busiest port in Bangladesh, with services to most districts in the country.  People from both sides of the Buriganga River cross the river in small boats.  The boatmen worked on the boats, often sleeping at night on the boats.

Wildlife category winner: Mehdi Mohebipor, Iran

Siena Award: Drone Photo Award 2022. WILDLIFE: 1st Place - Unite by Mehdi Mohebipour Flamingos sleep together at night for greater security and stay close to each other during the day , thus protecting each other.  In this body crowd, colorful shades of plumage and light reflections stand out.

Runner-up in the Wildlife category: Florian Ledoux, France

Siena Awards: Drone Photo Awards 2022. WILDLIFE: Runner-up - Learning Life by Florian Ledoux A young, hungry polar bear, is playing in the water trying new rocks and jumping back and forth in the water with his siblings, while their mother was resting nearby.  This image is the result of five months in the field, living with and near bears in a remote camp on the east coast of Svalbard.

Nature category winner: David Rouge, Switzerland

Siena Awards: Drone Photo Awards 2022. NATURE: 1st Classified - Encounter - by David Rouge This photo is the result of a dream come true: the encounter between the desert and the ocean.  As the drone climbs higher, the photographer notices a special atmosphere, where the light highlights the fascinating shapes of the sand dunes flowing out into the South Atlantic.

Sports category winner: Daniel Koszela, Poland

Siena Prize: Drone Photo Award 2022. SPORT: 1st Classified - Skiers Fall by Daniel Koszela The photo taken in March 2022 shows the competitors of the annual ski event: Bieg Piastów held in Szklarska Poręba, in its 46th edition.  Skiers splash in colorful costumes along the track surrounded by snow-covered trees.

Abstract category winner: Saurabh Sirohiya, India

Siena Awards: 2022 Drone Photo Awards SUMMARY: 1st Rated Salt Farm Workers Harvest by Saurabh Sirohiya Several workers work in salt pans, where they move salt to form salt pans. The circular path allows slow evaporation in the hot sun.  At the end of the day, the salt will be collected in baskets: it's a really hard job!

Wedding category winner: Krzysztof Krawczyk, Poland

Siena Awards: Drone Photo Awards 2022. Wedding: First Placed - Like a painting by Krzysztof Krawczyk The effect of the sun on the water, a felled tree and a brave bride lying on it : a beautiful picture painted by nature.  The water looks like a starry night sky, while the bride looks like a dreamy princess.

Praised entry: Michele Falzone

Siena Awards: Drone Photo Awards 2022. URBAN: Commended - A Love Tale in the Mist - Taj Mahal by Michele Falzone This is the mausoleum of the Taj Mahal on an incredible sea of ​​clouds over the Yamuna River.  The Eternal Monument to Love was built in 1632 to honor Mumtaz Mahal, the wife of Moghul Shāh Jahān, who died giving birth to their 14th child.

Siena Awards: Drone Photo Awards 2022. NATURE: Praised for Quetzalcoatl by Armand Sarlangue Aerial shots of Iceland's incredible rivers.  All patterns and colors are shaped below the surface of the water, as a result of deposits in the water.  The photographer called it Quetzalcoatl from the mystical creature shape he imagined from the intricate patterns.

Siena Awards: Drone Photo Awards 2022. NATURE: Commended - Ugly Puddle by Marek Biegalski This beautiful crater or volcano is named Ljótipollur, which literally means ugly puddle.  However, almost all craters with lakes inside are particularly beautiful and photogenic.  Ljótipollur is no exception with its red slopes and vegetation and layers of lava visible at the rim, alongside its beautiful turquoise blue waters.

Siena Awards: Drone Photo Awards 2022. SPORT: Commended- Frozen Motorcycle Track by Bryan Helm A lone racer runs down a slippery runway.  Taken one late afternoon, over the frozen Ghost Lake.  Trails left behind by motorcycles create winding patterns and shapes on the ice.

Siena Awards: Drone Photo Awards 2022. SUMMARY: Commended - The Eye of the Devil 1 by Xiping An Aiken Spring is known as "The Eye of the Earth" and "Devil's Eye" because it resembles an eye.  The spring is more than 10 meters in diameter, like boiling water, constantly refluxing, and the sulfur minerals around it accumulate for a long time, creating mesmerizing colors that can be seen from above.
