Can PBKS still qualify for the knockout round?

Punjab Kings (PBKS) will face Rajasthan Royals (RR) in match number 66 of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 at Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala on Friday, May 19. will be the last game of the tournament for both teams in the tournament and a must-win encounter there.

The Punjab Kings failed miserably at IPL 2023 in yet another disappointing year for them. They started their campaign impressively with close wins against Kolkata Knight Riders (seven runs – D/L method) and Rajasthan Royals (five runs). However, things have mostly gone downhill for them since then.

PBKS won only two of their last six matches in IPL 2023. Some hopes were rekindled when they beat Delhi Capitals (DC) with 31 points in the away game. However, in their last match, they knocked out the same opponent with 15 runs at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala. The loss dealt a blow to their knockout hopes.

PBKS needs a near miracle to qualify for IPL 2023 knockout round

After 65 matches at IPL 2023, Punjab Kings are eighth in the standings, with 12 points from 13 games. They also have a poor net run rate of -0.308.

If Punjab defeats Rajasthan in the final match of the tournament, they will finish with 14 points, but due to poorer conceding percentage, they will hardly be able to reach the top 4 after the tournament period ends.

For even slim chances of qualifying, PBKS will need to beat RR by a huge margin and then hope that Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Mumbai Indians (MI) will lose their matches. their last match by a huge margin, to the point where their net run rate dropped below PBKS’s.

However, that doesn’t sound like a realistic possibility, at least not in the case of RCB, which has an impressive net run of +0.180. MI, on the other hand, has a net run rate of -0.128.

Knight Knights of Kolkata (KKR) will also finish with 14 points if they beat Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in their final match on May 20. However, with a net run of -0.256, they are unlikely to make it through. into the top 4 even with a big win.
