Perceptions of corruption in the Canadian public sector have remained the same since last year.
This is according to Transparency International’s latest Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI), which ranks Canada 14th out of 180 countries. The country scores 74 out of 100 by 2022 — with 100 being the least corrupt and 0 being the most.
Each country’s score and ranking is based on data from 13 external sources, including the World Economic Forum and the World Bank, and aims to clarify which countries pose health threats. security and geopolitics for their own people and the world.
Considered a leading measure of corruption in the global public sector, the index provides “a more comprehensive picture of the situation in a particular country than can be obtained from each source separately,” the website of the Transparency International explains.
The website adds that global peace is deteriorating and that even countries with higher CPI scores contribute to broader global security threats.
Data stemming from corruption linked to government movements undermines public trust and poses security threats that are harder to control. It includes elements such as “dirty money from abroad” and destructive geopolitical ambitions, the site said.
Currently, Denmark has the highest score for low corruption, topping the ranking with a score of 90.
Canada’s CPI score is the same as last year and has fallen three points since 2020.
Transparency International’s website says that the CPI determination process is regularly reviewed to ensure it is as accurate and robust as possible.
“More than two-thirds of countries score below 50, while 26 have fallen to the lowest level,” explains the Transparency International website. “Despite concerted efforts and some hard-won gains, 155 countries have either made no significant progress in combating corruption or have declined since 2012. “
