Can’t support Democrats anymore, will vote Republican: Elon Musk

Tesla Inc TSLA.O CEO Elon Musk said on Wednesday that while he had voted Democrat before, he would now vote Republican.

“In the past, I voted for the Democrats, because they (mostly) are the party of kindness. But they have become the party of division & hatred, so I can’t support them anymore. and will vote Republican,” he wrote on Twitter.

“Now watch their dirty tricks campaign against me unfold,” said Musk, the world’s richest man who agreed to buy Twitter,

The 50-year-old billionaire recently said he would reverse Twitter’s ban on former US President Donald Trump, a Republican, when he bought the social networking platform. He also said Twitter is very leftist because it is headquartered in California, a state known for its progressive politics.

Musk has voiced criticism of the Biden administration and Democrats for its proposal to tax billionaires and give more tax incentives to union-made electric cars. Tesla does not have a union at its factories in the US.

Last year, Tesla, which sees California as the largest market in the United States, moved its headquarters from California to a more politically conservative Texas.

Musk moved his personal residence from California to Texas, where there is no state income tax. He has sold about $25 billion of Tesla stock since last year to pay taxes and fund his proposed takeover of Twitter. Analysts say the sales have helped him cash in on Tesla’s stock rally and diversify his fortune.
