Canton woman traveled to New York, slept on park benches to help in search after 9/11


DETROIT (WXYZ) – On September 11, 2001, skies were clear but soon those skies were filled with ash and smoke, changing an entire nation. “Every year, it’s tough. Everything comes back,” said Nancy Malone, founder of Hands of Light in Action.

Twenty years ago, Nancy Malone was a physical therapist and a single mother of three living in Canton, Michigan.

She was on her way to a patient’s home, and as soon as she opened that door and walked in, she witnessed the second plane crash into the World Trade Center, changing her life. her life forever. “That moment, I can’t even describe. With everything I have, I know I have to go, and I have a lot of friends in New Jersey, and they say you’ll never get in. “, said Nancy.

Nancy gave up everything she was doing, and she headed east to New York. She slept on a park bench and worked side by side with firefighters and police.

First responders are frantically searching for colleagues and survivors. Nancy joins one of the rescue efforts, helping to wash their eyes from dust.

“Anything anyone needs. We’ve tried to help and talked to a lot of firefighters. When anybody sits down and the police officers, you sit down next to them, and they have a story to tell, and they really need to tell it a lot of them shed tears because that day was supposed to work and their friend took over, and now, they can’t find it my friend,” she said.

After experiencing extreme loss and devastation, Nancy returned to Detroit and started Hands of Light in Action, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that helps those in need during times of natural disaster. ear.

In the 20 years since 9/11’s brazen act, and because of her work at Ground Zero, Nancy has received calls from all over the country to head to disaster zones. Her missions took her to places like New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina made landfall.

Nancy said that her experience in New York made her life and her purpose clear. “September 11 changed my life. This was not my plan. But 9/11 did. changed my life”.

Like Nancy and so many others, the 9/11 anniversary will forever be in their hearts.
