CATL details next-generation cell-to-pack battery technology with ‘disruptive’ water-cooled design

Any potential industry shift towards cylindrical battery cells in EVs not a foregone conclusion, let alone a factual trend. Case in point: Battery supplier CATL makes a strong argument for them with the latest version of portable battery technology, eliminating the idea of ​​a battery module altogether.

CATL last week revealed more details about its third-generation technology, also known as Qilin, or CTP 3.0. CATL unveiled Qilin earlier this spring with the claim that it is productionable more power than Tesla’s latest battery technology.

CTP 3.0 is designed around flexible, scalable housing and thermal management — part of the “sandwich structure,” which the company calls the three-part structure of its predecessors.

Flexible microphone bridges between cells can also help adapt to physical changes inside the package, aiding reliability. Perhaps most notably, CATL boasts an “out-of-the-box” water-cooled design for the package.

It offers a 50% increase in thermal efficiency over the previous package design and has four times more heat transfer area than before. Cooling channels between adjacent cells allow for faster response in temperature conditions for hot start in cold weather (5 min) or 10 min DC fast charge (10-80%).

CATL claims a more aggressive cooling strategy makes it compatible with “materials with higher energy density”—a strong hint that it is headed for other futures of chemistry such as sodium ion cells.

Overall, the CATL system delivers an impressive 72% volume utilization efficiency – meaning a portion of the volume is dedicated to the battery cells, the rest to structure, connectivity, safety features and cooling. That’s a huge improvement over the 55% volume utilization efficiency of the original CATL cell-to-pack system revealed in 2019.

Cell-to-pack technology is also a building block for CATL’s Evogo . battery swap business, which could help fit a much more flexible price into electric vehicles. So far, Evogo is focusing on China.

Although CATL’s CTP has so far focused on the prismatic format, the logic and enhancements can be extended to cylindrical cells. Recently, BMW is said to have pivoted to the Chinese supplier as one of the main suppliers Cylindrical cells in the next generation EV.

The CTP 3.0 will be mass-produced in China and production models will be available soon, CATL said. Hyundai, Kia and Genesis is one of the brands that have agreed to use this technology, although specific models are yet to be confirmed.
