CCTV Footage Captures Plane Landing on Busy Salt Lake City Highway
Old traffic is heavy on the Bangerter Freeway in Salt Lake City on Tuesday night after a small single-engine plane landed on the northbound ramp.
According to reports, the plane experienced technical problems when it was forced to land around 5:30pm, shocking rush hour commuters along the road. KSLTV.
Two men between the ages of 30 and 40 were on board, according to police. The pilot reported engine trouble and, realizing he couldn’t make it in time, dropped it off the highway.
Miraculously, no one was injured during the touchdown and no damage was incurred. Lieutenant Matt Pennington of the South Jordan Police Department told KUTV the incident “could have been a lot worse.”
Author Jesse Stay, who posted the footage on social media, captured the landing on security cameras.
“I think a plane just landed in front of my house,” he wrote in one video post.
Stay told The Daily Beast he was at home when he saw lights and sirens on the Freeway. “At first I thought it was just a car accident, but looking over where all the police and ambulances were, I noticed anything that looked like it had wings. That’s when I realized it was an airplane.”
The plane, a Cirrus commuter plane, was believed to have departed from Tucson, Phoenix and was en route to Ogden Airport when it experienced engine trouble. “I think the pilot is fine. He got up and moved around the plane,” said Stay.
The crew towed the plane to the airport overnight.
