Celebrate the little things, says ‘The Great Book’ author

Neil Pasricha knows something about happiness.

The bestselling author, known for his “Amazing Book” and “Equation of Happiness” series, has launched a new collection of tips on how to get the best out of life.

Hundreds of stories, hints, and commentary in Pasricha’s latest volume, “Our Wonderful Book,” are described as “a joy, a heartfelt gift, and a high point for humanity.”

He joined CTV’s Morning of You on Wednesday, to talk about the book and share a few ideas on how to have a great 2023:

GO OUT

As people spend less time outdoors, Pasricha says many are experiencing what’s known as “attitude disorder”.

“Some studies have found that even just going for a walk in a forested area can help reduce cortisol levels in the body,” he said.

“You can reduce stress by going for a walk in nature,” he says. “Know where the nearest hiking trail is. Know where the nearest park is. Know where the nearest forest is and take a 15-minute break in the middle of the day just to get out.”

Another study has found that reading a lot of fiction can help people develop empathy, compassion, and better understanding by opening up the brain’s mirror neurons, which are activated when someone performing an action or seeing someone else do the same thing.

However, just as people don’t get outdoors as much, a survey of Americans found that 17% of American adults won’t read any books by 2021.

“I say start with a pamphlet. Start with a pamphlet. Start with Animal Farm, The Old Man and the Sea…. Pick a fictional book and start even with just a few pages each. days,” said Pasricha.

thorny rose buds

Pasricha emphasizes a simple game — a kind of “happiness intervention” — to make people happier.

Called “roses, thorns, buds,” the game consists of everyone sharing three things: the highlight or something that went well, something that didn’t go well that needed to be let go, and finally, what they expect.

Pasricha says: Being happy doesn’t necessarily mean having many big moments in life. Most of the time, it is the little things in life that bring us the greatest joy.

“If you want to live a happier life, you have to notice and celebrate the little simple pleasures,” he says.

“At the right time, texting my husband to bring down the laundry, carrying the ice cube tray from the sink to the freezer without spilling. That’s what makes life truly wonderful.”
