CERN announces discovery of three ‘strange particles’

GENEVA –

The physics lab home to the world’s largest atom smasher announced Tuesday the observation of three new “strange particles” that could provide clues to the forces that bind subatomic particles together. .

The observation of a new type of pentaquark and the first tetraquark duo at CERN, home of the Large Hadron Collider in the Geneva region, offers a new angle for assessing the “strong force” that holds atoms’ nuclei together together.

Most exotic hadrons, which are subatomic particles, are made up of two or three elemental particles called quarks. The strong force is one of the four known forces in the universe, along with the “weak force” – which applies to the decay of particles – as well as electromagnetism and gravity.

The announcement comes amid a flurry of activity this week at CERN: Also on Tuesday, the LHC’s underground ring of superconducting magnets can propel microscopic particles along a 27-kilometer (approximately) circuit. 17 miles) and at near-light speeds, begins to smash them together. Data from the collisions are collected by high-tech detectors along the circle.

The so-called “Run 3” of collisions, which ends a three-year pause for maintenance and other inspections, is operating at an unprecedented energy of 13.6 trillion electronvolts, which will offer the prospect of new discoveries. New breakthroughs in particle physics.

CERN scientists hail a smooth start to what is expected to last nearly four years of operation in “Run 3” – the third time the LHC has performed collisions since its launch in 2008.

A day earlier, CERN had celebrated the 10th anniversary of the confirmation of the Higgs boson, the subatomic particle that occupies a central place in the so-called Standard Model that explains the basics of particle physics.
