Charles Kimbrough of famous ‘Murphy Brown’ dies aged 86

Charles Kimbrough, the Tony and Emmy Award-nominated actor who played the outspoken news anchor opposite Candice Bergen in “Murphy Brown,” died on January 11 in Culver City, California. He was 86.

Kimbrough played broadcaster Jim Dial for 10 seasons of the hit CBS sitcom “Murphy Brown” from 1988 to 1998, earning a 1990 Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. He reprized the role for three episodes in the 2018 reboot.

The New York Times first reported on his death and his son and agents confirmed it Sunday to the Associated Press.

SMS Talent, Inc., the talent management agency that represents Kimbrough, said: “Whether on stage or in front of the camera, he is a joy to see.

The agency said the actor died of natural causes in the hospital.

Kimbrough’s wife, actor Beth Howland, who played diner waitress Vera on the CBS sitcom “Alice” in the 1970s and 80s, died in 2016. They were married in 2002, more than a decade century after he divorced his first wife in 1991, Mary Jane (Wilson) Kimbrough, who died in 2007.

SMS Talent says Kimbrough is survived by an older sister, Linda Kimbrough, a son, John Kimbrough, a stepdaughter, Holly Howland, and a granddaughter, Cody.

Born on May 23, 1936, Kimbrough spent many years in the theater scene in New York. He was nominated for a Tony Award in 1971 for his Broadway performance in Steven Sondheim’s musical “Company”.

Kimbrough also voiced a gargoyle named Victor in the Disney animated film The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
