There are many ways to save money on flights.
But booking flights on a certain day of the week is not one of them, according to data from Google Flights.
Book midweek – and especially around midnight on Tuesday – often considered the best time to buy a flight. But over the past five years, US airfares bought on Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays have been on average only 1.9% cheaper than weekend airfares, according to Google Flights.
James Byers, group product manager for Google Flights, writes: “If your trip is only a few weeks away, don’t wait until Tuesday – book your flight now in case prices go up,” James Byers , group product manager for Google Flights, writes on a blog post published yesterday.
While the day of the week a traveler booked might not matter much, according to Google Flights research, they examined historical flight data for 5 years from August 1, 2017 to January 1. August 2022.
“On average, flights departing on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday are 12% cheaper than flights departing over the weekend,” Byers writes. “If you exclude international destinations, the potential savings go even higher by 20%.”
According to Google Flights, travelers looking to save money should avoid flying on Sundays.

According to the data, another popular strategy – book early – also works. For domestic US flights, airfares were at their lowest three to eight weeks before departure, with prices “bottoming out” for 44 days, according to the study.
Direct flights cost about 20% more on average than connecting flights, according to Google Flights, but flights with stops also increase the risk of disruption.
An Instagram poll by travel insurance company World Nomads found that more than 1 in 3 respondents spent up to $250 on flights, meals or hotels because of flight delays or cancellations over the summer. this, while 12% reported spending between $500 and $1,000.
Travelers with flexible travel dates can use Google Flights’ “date grid” function to quickly determine the cheapest departure and arrival dates for a given week.
Those who want to travel for a specific period of time – for example, two weeks – but are flexible in terms of time, can use the “price chart” function to see the cheapest flight times.
Price tracking also eliminates the need for repetitive searches to check prices on the desired route. Search for a flight route once, press the button to “track prices” and Google Flights will email flight fare change notifications.
Based on its historical data, Google Flights also recommends “best times” to book flights for peak periods and popular routes.
Travelers looking to save money on flights to Europe should plan as early as possible, while vacationers might consider planning weeks in advance, rather than months.
