Chevy Bolt production will restart in April after 8 months of battery recall



DIGEST – Synthetic engine said it would start doing Chevrolet Bolt EV and EUV again in early April after an eight-month hiatus due to a series the battery fire remember.

The automaker said on Tuesday that battery supplier LG Energy Solution is currently doing enough to provide replacement modules for the recall as well as to resume production.

The company will begin production of EV and EUV versions of the Bolt on April 4 at a plant north of Detroit. People who will start reaching out authorized dealer a few weeks later. The vehicle at the dealership at the time of the recall may be sold after the battery module is replaced.

In August, GM extended its previous recall to more than 140,000 Bolts sold worldwide since 2016 because of a battery manufacturing defect that could cause the vehicle to catch on fire.

The company said at the time that, in rare cases, batteries have two manufacturing defects that can cause fires even while parked.

The recall follows reports of 13 battery fires, GM said, this can happen when both faults are present in the battery modules.

In October, LG agreed to refund GM $2 billion for the cost of the recall, and the company remains in a joint venture with the company to produce batteries for the next generation of batteries tram.

The fires and battery recalls are an embarrassing setback for GM, whose lofty goal is to switch from internal combustion engines to battery-powered vehicles. GM sold just under 25,000 Bolts in the US before asking dealers to stop selling due to the recall in August.

To take the lead in the U.S. electric vehicle market, GM plans to spend $35 billion to launch more than 30 new battery-powered models globally by 2025, including about 20 in North America. The company says it’s ambitious to only produce electric passenger cars by 2035.

GM has said it plans to pass Tesla is the world’s leading seller of electric vehicles. Tesla sold just under 353,000 EVs in the US last year, according to estimates from Motorintelligence.com.

GM has started selling Hummer large electric vehicle and plan to start production Cadillac SUV next month. ONE Chevy Silverado electric pickup will launch in 2024.

By the end of the decade, GM expects an additional $90 billion in annual sales from electric vehicles.
