Chicago breast cancer survivor and bodybuilder Erica Langley shows her true strength
Langley was preparing for her first bodybuilding competition when a shocking diagnosis derailed her plans. After losing a significant amount of weight, she felt a small peach-like lump on her breast, which was later diagnosed as breast cancer.
Langley worked with her medical team at University of Chicago School of Medicine and underwent 20 weeks of radiation therapy and a double mastectomy.
Once it was safe, Langley returned to the gym and began training with her trainer, Bolo Young. She not only defeated breast cancer, but also defeated her opponent, taking home first, second and third place medals.
Langley credits her doctors and support system for keeping her optimistic and motivated while battling cancer. Now, she says she’s in the best shape of her life!
Langley and doctors at the University of Chicago School of Medicine encourage people to have regular screenings and annual mammograms.
