Chicago car theft: CPD hunts for suspect after car stolen with girl, 3, inside Clinton home in South Loop: ‘They took my baby’

CHICAGO (WLS) – Chicago police are hunting for a thief who stole a car with a 3-year-old girl inside in the South Loop on Wednesday night.

Police say a 26-year-old woman briefly exited the Chevy Equinox around 8:30 p.m. in the 1200 block of South Clinton Street while leaving her 3-year-old daughter in the vehicle. At that time, the suspect jumped out of the car in a crowded area and drove away.

The thief released the child, who turned 4 next month, in the 500 block of West Jackson Avenue, where a security guard found the little girl and called the police.

Chicago police said the girl was wandering in an alley near Union Station.

Police said the vehicle was later found empty in the 4400 block of South Shields Avenue in Canaryville. CPD was able to track the speeding vehicle on local streets and highways.

The family said the child was taken to Lurie Children’s Hospital in good condition for observation, but was traumatized.

The child’s great-grandmother was relieved but angry on Thursday morning.

She hopes the police will find out who hurt their family.

“I’m glad she’s okay because anything can happen to her,” Glecia Hood said.

Hood said she cannot thank God enough that her eldest granddaughter, Kartier Lee, 3, has been found safe.

“Just know she was left in an alley somewhere, but I’m just grateful that someone found her,” Hood said.

Hood said the girl’s mother stopped with a Chick-fil-A to quickly check the length of the line when someone got in the car and drove away with the child.

“We got the phone call, my niece was screaming, ‘they got my kid, they got my kid,'” Hood said.

She said she was praying for quick justice.

“I just hope I can find them,” Hood said. “I’m so angry – the monster.”

No one is currently in custody. Area Three detectives are investigating.

No description of the suspect was released as of Thursday morning, but there are cameras in the areas where the child was taken and found.
