Chile wildfires spread as death toll rises | Climate Crisis News

Chile Open one emergency declaration to another area as firefighters struggled to control dozens of raging wildfires that have killed at least 23 people in a record heatwave.

On Saturday, the government declared a state of disaster in the La Araucanía region, south of Nuble and Biobio – two south-central regions where a state of emergency was declared. This measure allows for greater cooperation with the military.

At least 23 people have death related to fire Interior Secretary Carolina Toha said at least 979 people had been injured by the raging fires, with 16 of them in serious condition. The death toll is likely to rise as Toha says there are unconfirmed reports of at least 10 people missing.

Mr. Toha said at a news conference that over the past week, the fires have burned an area equivalent to the area normally burned in an entire year.

As of Saturday morning, there were 251 wildfires raging across Chile, 151 of which were under control, according to Chile’s disaster agency Senapred.

“Seventy-six new fires appeared yesterday,” Toha said Saturday.

The minister also suggested the fires should be another wake-up call about the impacts of climate change.

“The evolution of climate change has shown us over and over again that this is central and likely to have an impact that we have to absorb much more of. Chile is one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change, and this is not theory but practical experience.”

Chile is asking for international cooperation to support firefighting efforts.

“We are asking for assistance from several countries to deal with the emergency,” President Gabriel Boric wrote on social media.
