China stages ‘strike drills’ around Taiwan, citing provocation | News

Taiwan accuses Beijing of undermining regional peace and trying to oppress its own people.

China’s military says it has conducted “attack drills” in the waters and airspace around Taiwan in response to what it calls provocations from the democratically administered island and the United States. .

Taiwan, which China claims as its territory, said Sunday’s drills showed Beijing was attacking regional peace and trying to win over the people of Taiwan.

China staged war game around Taiwan in August following a visit to Taipei by US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and on Saturday it condemned the United States for a new defense authorization law aimed at increasing military support for Taiwan.

In a brief statement, the Chinese military’s Eastern Theater Command said it had conducted “joint combat readiness patrols and joint firepower strike drills” around Taiwan. It does not specify the exact location.

“This is a resolute response to the current escalation of collusion and provocation from the United States and Taiwan,” it said without giving details.

“The theater’s forces will take all necessary measures to resolutely defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity,” it added.

Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense said China’s actions “once again highlight the mentality of resolving differences by force and destroying regional peace and stability”.

“The CCP’s ‘military threats’ are clearly aimed at intimidating our people and not in the interests of our people. [China’s] international image,” it said, adding that Taiwan will continue military reinforcement.

Taiwan has complained about repeated Chinese military activity near the island over the past three years as Beijing seeks to pressure Taipei to accept Chinese sovereignty.

America is the best of Taiwan important international donors and arms supplier despite having no formal diplomatic relations. US arms sales to Taiwan are a frequently fraught issue in Beijing’s relations with Washington.

Taiwan’s military is dwarfed by that of its giant neighbour. In particular, their air force has been stressed by having to constantly prevent Chinese incursions near the island.

China’s drills coincide with newly elected mayors and county chiefs taking up their posts in Taiwan following local elections last month in which the Democratic Progressive Party took control. rights have been defeated.

China has never renounced the use of force to control Taiwan.

Taiwan strongly opposes China’s claims to the island, saying that only its 23 million people can decide its future.
