Christian Cage Reveals WrestleMania nixed Plans For Him And The WWE Hall Of Famer

Former WWE Superstar Christian Cage says that he and Edge were supposed to split up after WrestleMania 2000, but plans have changed.

During the event, they faced The Dudley Boyz and The Hardy Boyz in a Triangle Ladder match for the WWE (formerly WWF) Tag Team Championship. They eventually won the match and earned their first tag team title.

Speaking on Matt Hardy’s Hard Life podcast, Christian Cage says that he and Edge not initially booked to win the match. Instead, they were supposed to disband after the match.

“I think it might be a few days before we actually sit down to put this matter together [the WrestleMania match], we don’t even know what the ending is,” says Cage. “At one point, someone else won, and Edge & Christian, we’re breaking up after this. So then we start talking a little bit before this, or after this, when we start talking and then we come back. ” [H/t Fightful]

It should be noted that Christian and Edge turned on their heels after the game. They lost the title to Too Cool, regained it, and then lost it to The Hardy Boyz at Unforgiven 2000.

Christian Cage says he and Edge changed the way WWE sees them as a team

After their match at WrestleMania 2000, Edge and Christian turned their backs and began cutting off the non-regulatory advertising. The AEW the star added that it changed their superiors’ impression of them.

During the podcast, Captain Charisma also mentioned that their comment shtick was what helped save their run as a team.

“Surname [WWE] asked us to say whatever we wanted and Adam and I started dropping F bombs. We shouldn’t – we had to lose and that changed our mind. They say, ‘Oh, these people aren’t done yet. There are more layers, like a card. ‘ Then they decided to let us win the game and then turned on their heels because they saw some personality there when we did that ad. Then we did a few things about the commentary and that’s what saved Edge and Christian as a team because we’re breaking up after this,” Cage said. [H/t Fightful]

Christian Cage is currently competing in All Elite Wrestling as a manager and competitor in the ring alongside current AEW Tag Team Champion, Jurassic Express. His former partner Edge is part of WWE Brand RAW, where he is currently feuding with AJ Styles.
