Chuck Schumer Explains How Nancy Pelosi Handled Donald Trump for Four Years

After more than three decades as a colleague in the National Assembly, Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) sat down Thursday for their first joint interview, in which Schumer summarized how The leader of the House of Representatives is about to leave office manages to deal with Donald Trump’s four years at the helm of the executive branch: “She raised five children.”

Speaking to CNN’s Jamie Gangel during lunch at a Chinese restaurant, the pair were asked about important if not confrontational events in Pelosi’s relationship with the former president, such as her tearing up of his State of the Union address in February 2020.

“Looking back at those moments, what was going through your mind?” Gangel asked both of them.

“I said, ‘He doesn’t stand a chance,’” Schumer replied. “I tell everyone [that] Nancy knows how to deal with Trump instinctively, because for the first time, you know, 35, 40 years of her life, she’s raised five kids and she knows how to deal with them. And that’s what helped her deal with Trump, because he’s a kid after all.”

Pelosi, now a grandmother of nine, laughs. She says her approach differs from that of her friends, in part because Schumer, like Trump, is New Yorker. “They speak their own way – they understand each other.”

After solving their reaction to Trump supporters storm the Capitol on January 6, the couple was asked about Trump’s presidential campaign and about the man personally.

“The American people have become wise to him. It took a little while, but they made it,” Schumer said, explaining why he doesn’t see a second term in the future for Trump. Pelosi, on a plate of dumplings, interjected: “I don’t think we should talk about him while we’re eating.”

Gangel then asked Pelosi to elaborate on an earlier quote she called Trump “crazy.”

“I think the intervention of his family or someone else is needed,” the congresswoman replied pragmatically. “I don’t think he’s at that level, no.”
