Classic game publisher Sunsoft says it’s back, will remake its classic games

Game publisher Sunsoft, best known in the West for 8-bit era games like Blaster Master, Batmanand Fester’s Quest, is trying to get back into video game publishing and development. On Thursday, the new Sunsoft – which technically never went away – outlined plans to re-release and revive its classic games catalog, starting with Vampire Survivors-inspired Ikki Unite and release favorite classic games Advertisement tricks! and Ufouria (known as Hebereke in Japan) for modern platforms.

Sunsoft is even hinting at bringing back Aero the Acro-Bat, the anthropomorphic bat that appeared in a pair of Sega Genesis and Super NES games near the pinnacle of platformer mascot games.

The publisher’s first game under the new plan, Ikki Uniteis the sequel of sorts Ikkian arcade game (later ported to Nintendo’s Famicom) about the uprising of a medieval Japanese peasant village against its feudal lord. Ikki Unite will expand upon the original single-player game with online multiplayer and be unmistakably inspired – if not completely copied – the cult hit of 2021. Vampire Survivors.

Yuichi Ochi, general manager of Sunsoft, told Polygon in an interview on Wednesday that Ikki Unite under construction on Vampire Survivors’ game design and viral success to help find an audience for the Ikki brand, which he admits had no global awareness. (Famicom port of Ikki known for its poor quality and is believed to be the basis for the derogatory phrase”kusoge“Or “game of fiends”, in Japan.)

Only a little more known than Ikki to be Advertisement tricks! (saw a Scandinavian release) and Hebereke (what feature?) Metroidsame mechanism and was released in North America for the NES under the name Ufouria: The Saga). But Sunsoft hopes to give those underdog games new exposure by bringing them to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows PC via Steam and Xbox One.

In addition, there are many games developed and published by Sunsoft that were hit games in Japan, but never made it to the West. Ochi hopes to revive those things. While Ikki Unite are being developed by Sunsoft internally, other titles are being developed with support from external studios. Sunsoft is open to working with smaller independent studios on its IP-based games, says Ochi: “Our strategy is very open-minded.”

So why bring back Sunsoft now, years after the last attempt to release the game? Quite simply, business is good for Sun Corporation, Sunsoft’s parent company, and the electronics company is looking to reinvest in game production, Ochi said. Ochi itself is relatively new to the company, joining Sunsoft in July 2021, after working at Capcom and other game companies in Japan and Taiwan.

But with a recognizable classic name, a following category of untapped franchises and now an official VTuber named Sunsoft Nosuke to deliver good news on games like Advertisement tricks! With a global audience, Sunsoft is proud to announce that it’s back.
