Jabout Gabrus didn’t realize he’d spent his entire comedy career preparing to travel the country to waste and be hilarious in front of the camera. But that’s exactly what he did, along with best friend and co-host Adam Pallyin their new truTV series 101 places to party before you die.
In this episode of Last Laugh Podcast, Gabrus talks about landing his dream job as a travel presenter and explains why the “before you die” sentence in the show’s title is so impressive. with him. He also talked about the origins of his incompetent intern Gino Lombardo on Bang Bang Comedy Podcasttell the story of his shameful horror Veep auditions before his comedy lover Julia-Louis Dreyfus, and reveals why he once quit in hopes of joining the FBI.
“This is my dream job to continue here,” Gabrus said of his and Pally’s new show, which was inspired by the book. 101 Places To Get F* Before You Die and is currently airing on Thursday nights at 10:30 p.m. on truTV. “The funny thing is, I can’t understand how I got here, but other than that, all the signs in my life point to me being here at last.”
Along with Pally, Gabrus began improvising at the Upright Citizens Brigade in the early 2000s, leading to a one-man show called “Blackout Drunk” where he “drinks 20 beers in an hour and tries recall stories about drinking.” He told me that “that show went on for “too long” and “must have been pretty brutal”. When someone suggested he try bringing it to the Edinburgh Fringe, he intelligently replied, “I think I’m going to die.”
Gabrus easily describes himself as an “absolute glutton who can’t stop eating and smoking,” even as that lifestyle became more difficult as he entered middle age.
“It is strangely like a Twilight Zone/Black mirror the kind of dream job you’d like, ‘I love to party,’ he explains. “Well, you’re 40 now and you don’t like to party as much as before but now you’re going to go to 101 places and we know it’s hard for you to say no to anything, so rock ‘n’ rolls Go, bitch!”
Both Gabrus and Pally turned 40 while filming the movie, which will take them to locales like Denver, Miami, and Utah’s Moab Desert to eat, drink, and hit high marks as if they were still alive. in the twenties. Gabrus joked: “It’s like a mid-life crisis and is being run by Discovery and Warner Brothers. “You can watch the slow-motion midlife crisis happening all around us.”
But while their feat may seem frivolous at times, it’s a purposeful midlife crisis.
Gabrus told me, “The ‘Before You Die’ part of the title isn’t about doing anything. “Adam’s mother died young and in her sleep. My father died very young from brain cancer. Adam and I both have a penchant for taking lives by balls, but those two events that inspired us a little more were, ‘What if you died at 50?’ If I die at my father’s age, I have only 12 years left. What am I going to do with these 12 damn years? “
He describes his father as a typical “workaholic” who is always “busy with his ass” and has a bookshelf that he always intends to read and a shelf of fine wine that he always plans to drink later. upon retirement. “And then he died with a box of books he had never read and a box of wine he had never drunk.”
As his father lay in his hospital bed, “barely active,” Gabrus and his family opened a bottle of their finest red wine and mixed it with a thickener that hospitals use to help dying patients swallow liquids. without suction. “So we were stirring in an expensive bottle of red wine and were feeding my dad with a spoon,” he recalls. “I said, ‘Look, Dad, I won’t die if I don’t try this damn wine.’ But that stuck with me forever: Read the damn book. Go drink. Spend money. Who cares? And now it’s like, dammit, will the world end while we’re still young?
“So the ‘Before You Die’ part of the title isn’t just tongue in the cheek,” he continued. “It really means a lot to the two of us, and I hope people take it in.
